
Julia Rose has been Associate Principal Horn of the Columbus (OH) Symphony Orchestra since September 1997. A native of Cannon Falls, MN, she attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where she was a student of Douglas Hill. While at UW she was the recipient of the Strelow full tuition scholarship, and also attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music during her junior year before returning to UW to graduate. She received a Bachelor of Music degree with Distinction in Horn Performance from UW in 1994, and was awarded the UW Music Faculty award for outstanding performance and scholarship.
Upon graduation from UW she became a member of the New World Symphony, where she played for 3 years. During that time she was also a member of the National Repertory Orchestra, and participated in the Solti Orchestral Project at Carnegie Hall and the Kent/Blossom Chamber Music Festival. While at the New World Symphony and afterward, she has pursued additional studies with John Zirbel, William Caballero, Gail Williams and Dale Clevenger. Mrs. Rose can be heard on orchestral recordings with the New World Symphony, the Solti Orchestral Project, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, and the Buffalo Philharmonic (as Guest Principal Horn).
Besides orchestral playing, Mrs. Rose is an active soloist. She was a prizewinner and finalist at the American Horn Competition in both 1999 and 2003, and won 1st prize (professional horn division) at the 2000 International Women’s Brass Conference Solo Competition. She was also the first horn player to win the New World Symphony’s concerto competition, where she also appeared as a concerto soloist. In addition to her regular orchestra duties with the Columbus Symphony, she appears regularly as a soloist and freelancer throughout Columbus and the state of Ohio.
